If it's all the same to you I would refer to you as shanks for the time being. I don't mean to impune your character but unless you are my sensei or show greater skill than I than I have a hard time referring to anyone as master. I don't even consider myself a master...

My Dad or Master needed his own profile for the LAJEDI Forum. Now when he wants to know or talk about something I don't have to ask for him. He can do things himself now. Welcome to the LAJEDI Forum "Master Shanks".
May the Force be with you.
Master DS

Oh yea I know, I don't cosider myself a Jedi Master at all. You can't just call yourself a Jedi Master you have to have the skills to back it up. Master DS is just my character name that's all. You can call me whatever you want:Master DS, DS, or by my real name Derek it doesn't mater to me. Same goes for my Dad. You can call him :Master Shanks, Shanks, it doesn't mater.

I don't mind calling either one of you ds and or shanks, just not the master portion of it...myself when I created my character I took into account my current lightsaber and martial arts weapons and experience.
Although in ninjitsu I am a shidan *third degree black* I don't call myself master because my lightsaber doesn't equate it...not to put that you on guys but...
hence
gray jedi knight kayden jorell wielder of the black destroyer, form seven master, apprenticed by master mace windu who is not part of the living force....

I think some people just use the title "Master" to denote respect. RamZ has addressed me as "Master Varekei" and I'm certainly no saber sensei. Maybe he was just referring to my aura of wisdom and holiness hahaha. (That's right, guys, those horns are only there to hold up the halo.)

I am aware of that but respect is earned not given. And if it's given then what's the point?

Hmnnn, very interesting point, and very true. But, one might also have the attitude that since we are all sentient beings we are all due respect until we prove otherwise.
(What?! A philosophical discussion on LA Jedi.com??!! What's the galaxy coming to???!!!)

very insightful Master Derrick, i never really looked at it that way, i usually refer to the other jedi, esp the lead instructors, as master because i respect what they have brought to the l.a. jedi table so to speak... each person in our collective has shown me a few things, wether it be a variation on a spin that someone on their first day has come up with, or one of the more expirenced members has corrected me in a form i am working on... i whole heartedly agree with you, and again, something new i have learned.

It's just like former Marines saying yes sir or yes ma'am to someone outside of the military .

I am aware of that but respect is earned not given. And if it's given then what's the point? Respect should always be freely given. That way it need not be "earned" the hard way. I have seen too many egotists learn respect the hard way, and its never pretty. The fact of the matter is that in the beginning we never know who or what we are dealing with, and it is much safer to assume that one is deserving of our respect than to assume they are not. Err on the side of caution and choose not to respect a person only when they have given you reason not to. In my opinion, anything else is arrogance, and unbecoming a civilized sentient.
